Knowledge to be mastered before starting coloring watercolor painting

August 21st at 4:05pm

Once all the necessary tools are prepared, it's time to start watercolor painting. To draw in a stable posture, first think about how to place various tools. Here is an example of placing tools for drawing with the right hand. If the reader draws with their left hand, they can reverse the order of the tools from left to right.

1. Water container

Prepare a wide mouthed empty bottle or watercolor bucket filled with water.

2. Towels

After soaking towels or other cloth strips in water, gently wring out the excess moisture for later use in adjusting the moisture content of the pen. Dry cloth strips do not absorb water.

3. Sketchbook

4. Color palette

If used indoors, you can choose a slightly larger color palette. Put it in your accustomed position.

5. Brush

Prepare a pointed and soft brush and a wider flat head brush (or brush).

Not limited to watercolor painting, the necessary condition for painting is that the amount of pigment should be sufficient. If the amount of pigment is insufficient, the painting can only be done according to the shape, resulting in the creation of a responsive work. Although there are corresponding measures for insufficient pigments, it is important to be proficient in using pigments.

All creations are included, and during the painting process, not only do we need to add paint, but there are also times when we need to reduce or remove paint. So, after applying a large amount of paint, taking away the excess parts is a shortcut to progress in creation.

The color grading sequence of watercolor painting

1. After absorbing a large amount of pigments that are close to the color of the object, add other color pigments to create a mixed color that is closer to the color of the object.

2. Apply to the cut strip of watercolor paper and confirm the color.

3. Repeat mixing pigments until satisfactory colors are obtained. At this point, it is important to mix more pigment than the painted area. Sometimes we only focus on the mixed color effect, and the result is that the color is matched, but the amount is insufficient. If that's the case, either you have to paint it thinner, otherwise you'll have to re color it.

5. Usually, the first pigment to be used has a larger coating area, and a wet, wider flat pen can be used at this time.

When taking paint with a pen, the amount absorbed by the pen at that time also needs to be taken into account.

7. Adjust the amount of paint on the pen by either stroking the edges of the color palette or using a towel to remove excess paint.
